• Each one of us has a “raison d’être”, or reason for being. God created us out of love for a purpose.
Some of us are aware of our own purpose from an early age but most of us spend our lives
searching for that purpose. The elements of this website have a “raison d’être”. So by way of
explanation here is a little run down of the elements.
• “How do you read it?” is a quote from Jesus taken from Luke 10:25-28.“On one occasion an expert in
the law stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ . ‘What is
written in the Law,’ He replied. ‘How do you read it?’ . He answered: ‘Love the Lord your God with all
your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’, and,'‘Love your
neighbour as yourself.’
• ‘You have answered correctly,’ Jesus replied. ‘Do this an you will live.’
• The cartoon character ‘Tom Tau’ is reflective of ourselves. He is named after “St. Thomas” or
“Doubting Thomas”, who, for all his exposure to Jesus, still had doubts about Him and the
resurrection. God made us all fully human and as such we are going to fall and fail and have
our faith tested and have our doubts but we must pick ourselves up, dust off and move on again
and keep on loving.
• The ‘Tau’ tee shirt that ‘Tom’ is wearing is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet and its symbology
is borrowed from St. Francis of Assisi who used it as a symbol of the cross. He marked it on the
walls of places he visited and stayed.St. Francis encouraged his followers to look upon their simple
sack like clothing, their ‘tunic’ or ‘habit’, as being presentative of the Tau cross when their arms
were outstretched. In this way he was guiding them to be living crucifixs, living, walking and
working among the people and setting an example for all.
• In a small way a Good Thief tee is also attempting to be a Tau cross, making a statement,
challenging our norms and questioning our prioritites. They are designed to challenge ourselves and
inspire others.Lastly and least importantly our corporate name is “Good Thief Co.”. We took our name
from the “Good Thief’ or ‘Penitent Thief’ of St.Luke’s gospel. He was apparently a human who also had
failings but was able to acknowledge them before God and was rewarded as being the only person
canonised by Jesus during his time on .earth. Surely we won’t go far wrong if we follow his example
and are contrite.Shouldn’t his company be the kind of company we aspire to keep?
